Uncool Playroom

Doughie told me that her playroom is "so uncool" and needs to be redone immediately. She wants me to paint it pink and blue. Well, after remembering the hours and hours I spent the first time, I told her no. I am so mean.

Heck, I remember my playroom, here is a pic.....yeah right, we didn't have playrooms! My "playroom" was the backyard with a 15-year-old, rusty swingset that you needed a tetanus shot before you played on it. The slide was tricky, it was metal and slowly ripping off, you had to play on it just right so you wouldn't tear your rump!

I guess if the worse thing I do as a mother is make my 8-year-old have an uncool playroom--I will take it.

At least Sassy seems to like it.

Heck, I still like it. But what do I know? I was content with a rusty swingset and lawn darts.

What do you think?

That is sooooo cute! Did you paint all that? I wouldn't be re-doing it either.

I can see why she would want just pink and blue :)
Just kidding. The boys' room in our old house had a scene painted on the walls...it was sad to leave and more sad to find out that not only did they kill all of my flower gardens, but painted all of the walls white. Ick.

I agree with you-- I remember swinging on the clothes lines in the back yard and jumping on the trampoline. I think your playroom is awesome!!

Doughie doesn't no a good thing when she's got it. You are a great mom and her playroom is so unique. She couldn't be luckier.

Lawn darts!! I loved lawn darts! So dangerous and so fun! Your play room is the coolest. You are so talented.

I'm so impressed with your "uncool" playroom! Don't you love how grateful children are.

Your playroom is more like a magical dreamland! Will you come paint my bedroom like that?

I think many parents try to give their kids the things that they think they would have liked to have had as children. The thing is, kids are just miniature adults; most don't appreciate what they've got and always want something "newer" or "better".

While we didn't have a playroom, we did have a couple of decades worth of cool toys (hand-me-down and otherwise); some of my friends were just as envious of our toys as I was of theirs.

//rant disclaimer//

These days, I think some kids' imaginations are stunted because they don't go outside and play like we did! I have fond memories of playing "quicksand" on the swingset, "hide-n-seek" in the garage, and "colored eggs" (not a very P.C. name, is it?) in the front yard! When we were inside, we made up our own games like "The Big Fat Bird" and "Rollercoaster" (Played one of two ways: Jerking around in the old rickety lazy-boy chair or by riding the black vinyl mattress down the stairs).

Modern toys don't leave a whole lot to the imagination. I can't tell you how many times I've given a kid a prize from my grab-bag at school only to hear, "what does it do?!" My thoughts are, "It's a toy, kid! It doesn't do jack crap unless you pretend it does!" Then I'd like to take it away from the ungrateful bastage. Instead, I try to come up with something it can do like, "Well, you can tear off its arms and legs and pretend its a potato!"

...It's not always easy coming up with something on the spot.

Ah, memories! I just remembered our homemade "Spook Alley" in the doghouse! Do you remember the fearsome Pac-Man ghosts I drew on the inside walls with my blue crayon?

Err, hmm... at least it WAS fun... until someone decided to tip it over, door down, with me and Brandy trapped inside screaming for 3 1/2 hours!

Okay, it was probably closer to 3 minutes, but they were 3 very long minutes of unadulterated torture!

What in the holy blazes did that have to do with anything?!

Nothing... nothing at all! I take pride as the King of Irrelevancy!

Thanks for all the nice comments....Yup, I painted it all by myself. I had help from my brother though. He drew some of the pics that I painted--a talented guy!

Willy, do you remember how the doghouse reaked? Well, as a kid, I thought it smelled fine...but later, yuck! We must have smelled like we had been rolling in poo!

By the way, what happened to the doghouse? Do you know?

I think the doghouse ended up at Celia's - I'm not entirely sure.

I do remember that it stunk inside, but I didn't care much. The dog bones didn't taste great either, for that matter, but it didn't stop me from squishing out and eating all of the meaty centers!

... I still get cravings now and again.

I took the doghouse to Pocatello with me. I gave it away last summer to make room on the patio for my scooter.

Our "playhouse" was given away? I was going to pretend to be sad...but I can still remember how it smelled.....whoever has it can enjoy it...

At least we had a swingset. Could have been worse. I know a man whose mother chained him and his sister to the bed because she worked nights and slept during the day and couldn't watch him.

New perspective, eh?

Anyway, we had many many hours of great fun dodging metal splinters of the behind, didn't we? :o)

Oh, and furthermore, I LOVE the playroom except when Sassy forces me to go in there when is is 20 degrees below zero in there and I have to watch her play. (I have long since learned that when I try to play, I do NOTHING right and get chastized madly.) :oP

You are right...it could have been worse...like across the street...they had a trampoline that was slowly ripping. What made it really exciting (besides the rip) is they also had a rabid dog that loved to chase you to the trampoline and then spastically nip at your feet as you jumped. You know how I love dogs.....great fun. It was the Terror Jump.

Did you read about this man? OR is it someone you know? That is terrible.

Yes, I know him. I couldn't believe my ears when he told me the story. AND his mother still doesn't think she did anything wrong. Go figure.
